ICJ Australia involves itself in human rights issues both in Australia and overseas. Some such issues in which the National Section has participated are:
- Organising seminars and publications on Aboriginal Rights issues including "Victims of the Law" and Native Title
- Regular reviews of Federal and State Legislation, and submissions and verbal evidence to Parliamentary inquiries
- Monitoring the implementation of International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and Protocol and other international Conventions
- Submissions to Parliamentary inquiries relating to legislation on counter-terrorism measures
- Submissions to Senate Inquiry on Human Rights in East Timor
- Observers sent to contentious trials in both Australia and the region such as those involving the Ananda Marga defendants, Benigno Aquino, Father Brian Gore, Kevin Barlow, President Sokomanu, Habeas Corpus applications in Malaysia and trials resulting from the Dili Massacre.
- Participation in regular Australian Government - N.G.O liaisons on human rights issues
- Participation in Refugee Council of Australia activities
- Representations to various Parliamentary Standing Committee enquiries
- Presenting amicus cases in the High Court and the Federal Court ports relating to its activities
- Human Rights violations in Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Fiji, Tibet and other countries in the region.
